The Real Reason My Autoimmune Disease Wouldn't Heal

When you have a severe autoimmune disease, desperation makes you willing to try just about anything.

For a decade, my life was a relentless pursuit of a cure. I was bouncing back and forth between the sterile walls of rheumatology clinics and the wild west of alternative wellness, constantly searching for the one pill, the one diet, or the one therapy that would finally give me my life back.

But looking back, root healing was not the priority of my care team. I was just adding more and more noise to a system that was screaming for silence.

The Conventional Trail

If you looked at my medical chart, it read like a textbook on autoimmune escalation. Over the course of 10 years, I was prescribed a staggering list of medications:

  • Prednisone

  • Hydroxychloroquine

  • Methotrexate

  • Enbrel

  • Orencia

  • Remicade

  • Rituxan

  • Xeljanz

And this doesn't even include the years I spent taking Ibuprofen around the clock just to be able to get out of bed and walk. I was taking low-dose chemotherapy drugs and sitting in IV infusion chairs, hoping the heavy artillery would put out the fire in my joints.

The Alternative Trail

At the exact same time, I knew the drugs were taking a toll on my body, so I frantically tried to balance them out with every holistic approach I could find. I threw everything at the wall, hoping something would stick.

  • I would bounce on and off gluten-free and dairy-free diets and avoid inflammatory nightshade veggies (potatoes, eggplant, tomatoes, and peppers) take herbal supplements like turmeric/ black pepper and Boswellia,

  • I slathered my aching hands in MSM and DMSO lotions.

  • I forced my stiff joints through yoga classes and swam laps in Olympic sized swimming pools.

  • I laid on tables for acupuncture.

  • I even went as far as trying Bee Venom Therapy, allowing live bees to sting me, hoping the venom would modulate my immune system.

When the physical pain got unbearable, I would go get massages just to find an hour of relief. But something strange kept happening: I would leave the massage table profusely crying. At the time, I thought I was just overwhelmed. Later, through my clinical mental health training, I would understand that these were massive somatic responses. My body was physically releasing the deep "fight-or-flight" trauma it had been storing in my tissues for years.

Here is the hard truth: None of it worked.

Why didn't the yoga work? Why didn't cutting out dairy stop the flares? Because my internal "soil" was fundamentally barren...I had created a dust bowl in my body.

If you get one thing from this blog post I hope it is this...the most destructive drug in my daily routine wasn't the maximum-dose biologic; it was the bottle of Ibuprofen. NSAIDs (like Ibuprofen) work by blocking pain receptors, but they simultaneously destroy the protective mucosal lining of your stomach and intestines. Every time I took a pill to stop the joint pain, I was causing microscopic tears in my gut. This created "Leaky Gut," allowing undigested food and toxins to leak into my bloodstream, which caused my immune system to launch an attack, resulting in more joint pain.

It was like trying to plant a beautiful garden in soil that I was actively pouring gasoline on every morning.

Quieting the Noise

Getting off the Ibuprofen and the heavy meds was the scariest part of my journey. When you drop the painkillers, the mask comes off. You have to feel the raw, unfiltered baseline of your inflammation. You have to sit in the fire.

But that is where the real healing began.

Nothing worked until I quieted all the noise and committed entirely to healing my gut. I had to stop throwing medications, bee stings, and random diets at my body. I had to hit the emergency brake, clear the field, and pace myself. I had to learn how to seal the gut lining and refertilize my body's ecosystem and then rebuild the top soil with ancestral nutrients.

Your Sovereign Step

Healing isn't about adding more to your plate; it is about taking things off. It is about removing the interference so your body can do what it was designed to do: repair itself.

If you are exhausted from trying to manage your symptoms with heavier drugs or the latest wellness fads, it is time to change the map.
